Jesus lays out the simplicity of the Gospel in Mark 16:15-20. I’m ready to take these words at face value and see them come forth in power. I’m ready to experience what I believe. I’m believing this for me and for the Body of Christ. It’s His will for us!

Mark 16:15-20

“And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.’ So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. (Here’s my favorite part) And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.”

A couple of things stand out to me in this passage:

1. The word believe. It’s the key to the whole passage and without it, the rest cannot exist. These signs will follow those who believe. If I don’t see these signs following me, am I really operating in belief? It’s a tough question and one I must take to the Lord for discovery and council. He is the one who has permission to inspect my heart and reveal to me the things that need to change. As I more fully submit every part of myself to Him, He will give me power to change!

2. I love how the writer let’s us know that Jesus departed from this earth because what happens after His ascension cannot be attributed to the fact that Jesus was physically among them. Then, in the very next verse, it says that the disciples obeyed the word Jesus had spoken to them and something amazing happened. It says the Lord worked WITH them and confirmed the word through the accompanying signs.

How could the Lord work with them if He was in heaven?

The physical life of Jesus was finite. It would’ve ended at some point. But since Jesus ascended into heaven the Holy Spirit was released to the early believers and would continue to live in all believers who followed, therefore allowing the works of Jesus to remain alive on the earth through His people infinitely. I absolutely love that concept, that truth, that possibility! If I believe, I will obey, and when I obey, the Lord will work with me and confirm His word with evidence. Because this was done through the Spirit in the early believers, I can have confidence that it is not only possible, but is God’s will, for this to happen in my life because it is the same Spirit living in me that lived in them.

I encourage you to stand on this word for yourself and know that this is the overcoming life and the abundant life Jesus promises in John 10:10.
